SABATON – Uprising (2010) – Official Video

Even if metal is not your cup of tea this video is a real gem of cinematography and story telling. Having seen the band’s preview film of the shooting of the video it was very interesting to see how it all came together. Sabaton have won many plaudits in Poland and Scandinavia for their music and historical themes, and with this video I definitely think they have stepped it up to the next level.

One life

Copy right Random Acts 2010
In the embers of the evening, as the sun slips beneath the foamy waves, on the shore we watch as orange becomes violet becomes star light. Dreams of youth unfurled across our dreams, touching every corner of the twilight slumber, upon awakening we shake the cobwebs from our minds, and crisply set about the day. The cornucopia of exuberant ambition overflowing the brim of youth laps a little less as each day goes by, until like the fading light we so enjoy they become a wistful memory.

Whether rock god, A-lister, or best seller we all dreamed once of joining the starry pantheon, immortality preserved on vinyl, celluloid, and paper. In so many finite ways each one of us sought to be the next dazzling moment, only for life’s twists and turns to take us down a different path. The bright burn oh so very bright, just just as often only burn for mere moments in eternity. We, those whose embers flicker lackadaisically  on life’s hearth, need only recognise the talent within, and with time and effort we too can breath life back into long dormant skills thought lost upon far away shores.

If you seek to re-ignite the blazed within then look around for the inspiring spark to create that bushfire of ideas, that raging storm of un-quenchable creativity, and unleash it upon us all, for you only have one life, and it is made for living. Let your inner creator loose, and you will find a whole new way to view the setting sun.

Mellisa Rodwell – Fashion Photography Blog

Over the summer of 2009 I went hunting for websites to help me better understand fashion photography, the business behind it, and ways in which I can improve my own photography. I stumbled upon what in my honest opinion is the best site for up-and-coming fashion photographers in the form of Fashion Photography Blog (FPB). Run and written by fashion photographer Mellisa Rodwell the site shines with her wit, creativity, and kick arse photography. Seriously, check out her work if you are interested in fashion, as her ideas and techniques will definitely help you develop and grow.

Her Twitter feed gives a run through of her schedule, and if you are looking for a cool photographer to follow her feed is definitely worth adding.

Pan’s Labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno)

When I first heard about Pan’s Labyrinth I was hesitant to watch it because I honestly thought it was a kid’s movie. I will admit I was completely wrong about that statement. It’s anything but a kid’s movie.

It has two story lines in one which entwine together, it’s a war story and a fairy tale.

It’s an odd mix but it works really well, the story is about a girl called Ofelia during the Spanish Civil war who travels with her heavily pregnant mother to live with Captain Vidal. He’s part of the fascist movement, and is a rather brutal character through out the film. He’s very violent and very cold.

At the beginning of the film, it tells of a fairy tale of a princess who grew tired of living in the labyrinth and wondered onto earth, but she never went back and lived the life of a mortal. So she grew old and eventually died as mere mortals do.

Through out the film, you see all kinds of creatures. The one that stood out the most to me wasn’t the Faun, it was ‘The Pale Man’ which is possibly something along the same lines as a cannibal version of the Child Snatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

This thing honestly did creep me out, not the fact it saw out of it’s hand but the noises and the way it moved.

I think that’s far more valuable for creatures and monsters, not the look but the way they move and sound. Its so much more effective as the audience can then let the imagination run away with them and see what it is for the selves than rather have it in front of them.

But before she discovers the child eating monster that sees out of it’s hands, she meets Pan; the faun. Who tells her what and what not to do, which in all fairness she should really of listened but if I found a random Faun in my garden telling me to do things I’d probably ignore it.

At first you don’t actually know if he’s good or bad, there’s a few twists and turns that make you wonder.

It has a few strong female characters too which is always good to see since, in the majority of films. Their running around screaming not having a clue what to actually do with them selves. So it’s really good to see a change, by this I’m referring to the character Mercedes. I can honestly say she was epic and gave the Captain what was coming to him. They should put more women like her in films because they’d be far more interesting, at first she seems very frightened and fragile but she’s anything but.

Ofelia is a typical kid, running round, doing things she shouldn’t when it’s not the time or the place and pretty much getting into trouble and letting her actions out before actual thought.

Oddly the best thing I think about the film is the fact it’s in Spanish, obviously it has subtitles or I wouldn’t know what was going on. But because you have to read and watch, it makes you pay so much more attention and appreciate the film more.

It’s one of the best works I’ve seen from Guillermo Del Toro and I’d seriously recommend it. Even if your not into fantasy, see this film. Because it’s not just a fantasy film.

The age of reason – why LGBT rights are everyone’s rights

“THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.
THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.
THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up.”
Pastor Martin Niemöller January 6th, 1946

In the  last twenty years western Europe has undergone a sea change in attitudes towards gay rights, and universal human rights in general. Feminism, black and minority communities, and disabled people have all benefited from the emancipation from the social shackles previously binding them, and in turn the LGBT community have been on the crest of a wave as far as pushing universal normalisation of equal rights for all members of society.

Which is why it is essential that we in Western Europe need to speak with a strong and determined voice to raise awareness for those who’s voice is drowned out by the rants and rage of the ignorant wishing to keep them in the shadows. Iran, Saudi Arabia, certain parts of the USA, many parts of Africa, and even India all discriminate, brutalise, and occasionally kill people for their personal sexual orientation. Indeed, in many parts of the world being a female foetus is enough to have you terminated before you are born, so the notion of gay rights or women’s rights is a misleading one, LGBT rights should be everyone’s rights – the right to life, the right to freedom of expression, freedom of affection, and freedom from punitive punishment because of the sex, gender, colour of your skin.

Niemoller’s warning is as stark and vivid today as it was 64 years ago. If we do not speak out against the encroaching shadows, seek to push them back, and bring the light of reason to the darkness, then we as a whole will suffer. This is a call to action, a determined shout to make you care about your rights, and responsibilities, and to make you realise just how fragile those rights are. If you care for freedom and liberty then you, we, have the responsibility to voice your support for those freedoms, and if they are threatened then we have the responsibility to ensure those in power hear our voice, and think twice before taking away our hard won freedoms – and at the same time we need to fight for those who do not enjoy our rights, as they are in desperate need of vocal support from those who can voice their opinions.

In the end something as simple as attending Pride, discussing the issues with work colleagues and friend when the opportunity arises, or writing to your elected representatives will make a difference to those around you who are unable to do such things. We have a voice, so lets use it, and make the age of reason a time of hope not regret.

Fashion Babylon

Over the Summer of 2010 the Corn Exchange in Leeds blossomed into a must go place on the edge of Leeds City Centre, and is fast becoming the new fashion Babylon of Yorkshire. As sumptuous as the surroundings the boutiques are elegant, classic, and above all always on trend, so if you are looking for a great place to shop in Leeds then check out the Corn Exchange.

For this shoot I wanted to showcase both the architecture and the clothing on offer, and also use historic paintings as a jumping off point for the composition, to give a timeless feel to a simply stunning building.

Models of Diversity evening 29th July 2010

Glad rags aired, cameras clicked, and celebs spotted – the Models of Diversity evening was a glamour filled night which proved the point that glamazons come in many shapes and sizes. Thankfully RA was there to capture the ambiance on film, and all we can say is that based on the models strutting their stuff I am sure you’ll be hearing about them all for a long time to come. RA is committed to expanding fashion and photography to the nenth degree, and fingers crossed we will be able to do shoots with lots of the great people we met on the night.
